Potty Time

I read somewhere online that an average baby goes through 8-10 diapers a day their first year. That wasn’t our case, we were going threw what felt like 20! ?

We were literally getting those Honest bundles 3 times a month. I was even to the point of considering cloth diapering. The only thing I knew it’s a bigger investment upfront, am I right? I’m sure there are pros and cons of cloth and disposable diapers.

IMG_6472I ended up not trying it out with Cataleya, assuming we missed our window. However, I’m not going to turn down the idea just yet. We have plenty of time to research more into the idea for future babies.

This was a discussion I brought up at my mom’s group and that’s when Eliminatation Communication aka EC was brought up. I’ve never heard of it, questioned if it is really possibly for a baby to cue to us when to eliminate their waste.

Four months old is when we started EC with Cataleya. All we needed was a simple  infant potty so we picked one up a BABYBJORN at BuyBuyBaby.  Since then we’ve saved an average of 6 diapers a day. Jezriel and I have noticed we become much more in tune with our daughter, and even building a stronger bond.

Now we only do EC part-time and are working up to full-time. I feel our biggest challenge is incorporating this in public areas, because I’d prefer not carrying a potty around the mall.

What are some tricks your family has, would love to know?

  1. Hi Rai! Do you have a follow-up post on this? I’m interested in this whole Elimination Communication thing. I’ve never heard of this until your most recent post, “Why Not Try The Cloth Diaper Way!” and I feel like a whole new world just opened up to me lol

        1. You can start as early as birth. We started at four months, that’s when we learned about it.

Your second question ties into your third. Very similar to how you recognize your babies hunger cues.

For example, Cataleya has a predictable routine of needing to potty when she wakes up in the morning or after naps.

Throughout the day, I notice she gets really antsy. Shoveling her legs around, her eye get a little watery if she needs to poop. When she seems uneasy I always nurser her but if she’s not interested I put her in the potty and that usually does the trick.
